Artists

Ethan's Beak

Ethan van Sciver

New X-Men #117
Other Works: Aquaman, Impulse
Though Van Sciver drew Beak for only one issue (and one cover), his version is arguably the definitive one, since New X-Men #117 was Beak's very first appearance.

Igor's Beak

Igor Kordey

New X-Men #119, 125
Other Works: Soldier X, X-Treme X-Men
In New X-Men #119, Beak's eyes change from the original brown to blue. Since then, he's been most often portrayed as having blue eyes. Aside from that, Kordey's portrayal of Beak is mostly consistent with Van Sciver's.

Frank's Beak

Frank Quitely

New X-Men #126, 136-138
Other Works: The Authority, Flex Mentallo
Quitely's is probably the strangest version of Barnell. The eyes become obsidian, the beak is more like a human's skull than a bird's mouth and in place of talons Beak has regular human fingers.

John Paul's Beak

John Paul Leon

New X-Men #131, 135
Other Works: Earth X, Static
Leon's Beak looks an awful lot like Howard the Duck. Is that a good thing or bad?

Phil's Beak

Phil Jimenez

New X-Men #140, 141, 146-150
Other Works: Planetary, Wonder Woman
Jimenez's is my favorite portrayal of Beak. He's still scrawny, but at least he doesn't look quite so underfed. He also seems to have had a bit of a growth spurt.

Mizuki's Beak

Mizuki Sakakibara

Exiles #46-48, 50-51, 54, 58-59, 62-65
Other Works: Namor (covers), Silver Surfer (covers)
Sakakibara's work is very cartoony compared to the darker, grittier art of the New X-Men artists, but it's still a pretty good rendition. The jelly eyes take some getting used to, though.

Jim's Beak

Jim Calafiore

Exiles #49, 52-53, 55-57, 66-68
Other Works: Deadpool, Force Works
Calafiore's Beak is perhaps excessively wrinkly, and his talons seem to bend in the middle of the forearms rather than at the wrist. Other than that, Calafiore's version is consistent with past depictions of Barnell.

Chris' Beak

Chris Bachalo

X-Men: Age of Apocalypse #1-3, 5
Other Works: Generation X, Uncanny X-Men
Because Bachalo's Beak exists in the Age of Apocalypse reality, his appearance is drastically different from the Beak that we are all familiar with. AoA Barnell ostensibly still has a birdlike mutation, but his skin is green, he has human fingers instead of talons and his apparent lack of nose and beak gives him a striking resemblance to the character of Morph.

Paul's Beak

Paul Pelletier

Exiles #69-72
Other Works: Negation, She-Hulk
Pelletier draws Beak's beak somewhat smaller than past artists have. His talons are likewise shorter, and his eyes gray rather than blue. In keeping with the trend set during Exiles' "Bump in the Night" arc, Beak's hair is now white-blond rather than just plain blond. Pelletier also does a stellar job of communicating Beak's emotions through his facial expressions.

Andy's Beak

Andy Smith

Weapon X: Days of the Future Now #4
Other Works: Green Lantern, Hawkman
Smith's Beak is the most similar to Ethan Van Sciver's original design. The beak is the same length and size, though he retains his dark eyes and white hair from Paul Pelletier and Jim Calafiore's more recent renditions.

Ramon's Barnell

Ramon Bachs

Generation M #4
Other Works: Civil War: Front Line, Joker/Mask
Bach's Barnell is largely consistent with Pelletier's version --- from the narrow face and prominent nose and ears to the hairdo that vaguely resembles a mohawk. And while I miss my old Beak, I have to admit, the human Barnell is kind of cute, too.

Paco's Barnell

Paco Medina

New Warriors #1-6, 9-12
Other Works: New X-Men, Suicide Squad
Except for the blond hair, Medina's version is almost completely unrecognizable as a depowered Barnell. This Barnell is handsome and well-built, and lacks the character's trademark sizeable nose and mohawk.

Jon's Barnell

Jon Malin

New Warriors #7-8
Other Works: Cable & Deadpool, NitroGen
Malin's version of Barnell is more or less faithful to Medina's original New Warriors-era depiction of the character. The only deviation is that Malin's Barnell is more lantern-jawed, as well as leaner and less square-bodied. Strangely enough, the colorist partnered with Malin gave Barnell brown hair, as opposed to the blond hair he's been sporting in the majority of his appearances.

Zach's Beak

Zach Howard

Exiles: Days of Then and Now
Other Works: JLU, Star Wars: Dark Times
Howard's Beak is about as scrawny and awkward-looking as you'd expect an old school-Beak to be, made infinitely creepier by his crazy red eyes and preppy Omega Gang sweater-vest. Howard does a good job of making a familiar, often-laughable face into something genuinely frightening.

Reilly's Barnell

Reilly Brown

New Warriors #13, 16-17, 19-20
Other Works: Cable & Deadpool
Brown's Blackwing is fairly consistent with Medina's original depiction: massive body, square jaw and strong features.

Koi's Barnell

Koi Turnbull

New Warriors #14-15
Other Works: Black Panther, Fathom
Turnbull's Barnell is somewhat inconsistent, varying in appearance from panel to panel. Sometimes he's square-jawed, other times he's long-faced. Sometimes he looks like a teenager, and other times a grown man. Turnbull fares better when the character's in costume, as his Blackwing is fairly bad ass.

Casey's Barnell

Casey Jones

New Warriors #18
Other Works: Guardians, Jubilee
Jones' Barnell is similar to Jon Malin's, being longer and leaner-bodied than he's usually portrayed, with more angular facial features.
